Here is the interview in full

Stunning Men – Hello Marcelino, welcome to Stunning Men and thank you for taking part to this interview.

Marcelino Rosas – Hello, happy to be here.

SM – Could you tell us a little about yourself and childhood?

MR – A little about myself? I am a California boy who was raised in the heart of Los Angeles. I come from an active family so I enjoyed playing soccer. I played for almost 12 years, was captain of my high school team, and even played professionally for a year.  I am a movie collector, writer, editor.

SM – Was modelling something you always wanted to do? How did you become a model?

MR - I actually got started modelling by accident. I started helping photographer friends with shoots. Well they needed models and when I hit 18 I did my first shoot with a good friend of mine Kurt R. Brown (Whose book “Earthly Beauty” just came out). I was a mess at first, making the funniest faces but I got the hang of it with the help of Kurt. Ever since then I have been doing shoot after shoot. It’s mostly done by word of mouth, by people that I know, or people who contact me directly. I have no agent; maybe one day I will, but at the moment I am enjoying the ride. Modelling isn’t my “Dream” but it’s sure a blast to do.

SM – What do you enjoy the most in modelling?

MR – The best thing about modelling is that you get to meet great people and travel to all sorts of places. I have worked with some of the best in the business (Greg Gorman, Scott Hoover, Rick Day, Dylan Rosser, Ed freeman) but I hope to get better at it every time I‘m in front of the camera. I hope to work with a few more great photographers and maybe land a few more covers! (Marcelino flashes his great smile)

SM – What do you like most when working with a photographer?

MR – What I like most when I work with a photographer is that each one is different and has their own way of working. They have a certain idea in their head that they want to do and it’s my job to make the image come to life. I always do my best to deliver. It’s just nice when it all comes together. I appreciate good communication and the respect they give me.

SM – How do you prepare before a photoshoot?

MR – I always hit the gym before a shoot to give a better picture. To get the blood flowing and wake me up because most of my shoots happen very early. So gym is a good wake-up. I drink lots of water and eat only a protein shake before the shoot and go crazy after it’s done. In ‘n’ Out is a good treat after a long day.

SM – You have done some nude shoots. How do you find being naked in front of the camera?

RM – Yes, I have posed nude before but it’s only been for a few photographers.  It’s only because I truly trust them and believe in the idea for the shoot. I am a big art lover and sometimes nude makes a better picture. The underwear does get in the way sometimes. Without them it gives the photo more of a natural feel.

SM – Do you have any tips to get things more comfortable during a nude shoot?

MR – All I can say is laughter helps. Being nude is a bit uncomfortable for everyone so breaking the ice always makes things easier. So I would say something like “Is it cold in here or is it just me? or “Fluffer anyone?” I’m a bit of a jokester. I always try to make a good relationship between the photographer and I. When two people are on the same page things just work better and it’s more fun.

SM – Have you done any runway work?

MR – Sadly I am too short for runways and haven’t worked with fashion designers. I would’ve loved to do them but when you’re 5’9 there really isn’t any place for you. Maybe in the future I’ll work for a benefit event or something.

SM – Do you think male models have the same exposure as female models? Or is it still a female dominated industry?

MR – Male models nowadays don’t have the same exposure as female models but we aren’t that far away. With more and more female artists, the need for male models is pretty high. Nikki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Beyonce, Rihanna ...  they all need male models for their videos. And of course my boy David Gandy breaking walls with the first D&G book featuring only him. It’s a big deal. Slowly but surely male models are catching up to women.

SM – Could you take us through your gym or training routine?

MR – Work out 6 days a week. One cheat day to eat whatever I want and take a day off the gym. I work out different muscle groups every day. My cardio day is usually one hour in treadmill. I try and push myself every time I lift weights.

SM – Do you consider yourself a fashionista? And what do you like wearing when you are not working as a model?

MR – I’d like to say I am a fashionista. I do like to wear nice clothes but I have to admit I love a lot of vintage clothing. Hunting for cool clothes is always a fun thing to do on the weekends. I like to wear board shorts, plain shirts, graphic tees, jackets, and I’m hoodie obsessed. I am a big fan of crazy colours. The more different it is, the better.

SM – I imagine you get recognized in the street from time to time. Does it annoy you?

MR – I am always surprised if someone recognises me. I actually like it. I’m not a fame whore or anything but it’s nice to see people actually like the finished product or whatever they saw me in. Good feedback is always nice to hear. People sense that I am a nice guy so I’m not too unapproachable. I will stop and talk to them. Always love meeting new people. It doesn’t happen too often though. (Marcelino gives us his irresistible smile)

SM – What do you think about the industry?

MR – The fashion business is a hard thing for everyone who’s trying to make it. That’s why I don’t take it too seriously. I take it as a fun ride and a big learning experience. I have friends who model, act, do voice-overs, do drag, make-up, photography, DJ, and risk everything just to make it. It’s a hard life but if you are lucky enough, have the drive and the talent, it can be done. The secret is to always have a backup plan.

SM – Do you have role models in the fashion world? People who inspired you to pursue a modelling career?

MR – My favourite female model is definitely between Gisel Bundchen and Alessandra
Ambrosio. The male models who inspired me are Jon Kortajarena  and Edilson Nascimento.

SM – Now a few fun personal questions if we may? Do you think you are a good date?

MR – I am a hopeless romantic so when I go in for the hunt I don’t say cheesy lines. I try to be polite, keep eye contact, and try to get to know them. Show that you are genuinely interested and not just trying to get some.

SM – What do you do to have fun, relax?

MR – I try to always enjoy life so a good hike, hitting the beach or catching a good movie does the job for me.

SM – What’s the craziest thing you’ve done?

MR – The craziest thing I have ever done I think has to be having sex in a nearly empty movie theatre while the movie was playing. But I wouldn’t recommend it!

SM – Are you a brief man or a boxer kinda guy?

MR – My favourite undies are boxer briefs by Hanes, they are just comfortable, look good, and give support to my boys.

SM – What singers/musicians do you like and what do you listen to on your iPod?

MR – Lady Gaga kicks ass. My iPod is filled with all kinds of music but mostly good house music.

SM – We know models have to watch what they eat; but do you have any guilty pleasures?

MR – My guilty pleasure is Red Robin chilly cheese fries! Yum! Try some.

SM – If you weren’t modelling, what would you be doing?

MR – If I weren’t a model I would be a physical education teacher or a professional soccer player.

SM – Do you have any projects or planned photoshoots coming up?

MR – I have a few modelling gigs coming up but what’s taking up most of my time is finishing up my novel ”Afuera: A Young Latino’s Journey”. It is a gay teen fiction book that is based on things that happened in my life. (Marcelino smiles) So far it’s going good. So look for it when it comes out.

SM – Marcelino, thank you so much for answering our questions and for being such a good sport.

MR – Thank you for having me.

SM – One last thing before you go; do you have a motto or something you live by?

MR – My motto for life is “You can if you think you can.”

SM – All the best Marcelino, in your life, your modelling career and with your novel.
